Dia dhaoibh, a Ghaeilgóirí:
If I haven’t told you about my recent visit to the Irish Gaeltacht, then I must do so now! This past summer I was lucky enough to be awarded a Gaeltacht summer award from the Ireland-United States Commission for Educational Exchange to study at Oideas Gael in Donegal.
I spent two weeks immersed in the Irish language, on the beautiful shores of Glen Cholm Chille. We participated in 5 hours of language classes each day, and attended Irish cultural events in the evening. I really can’t say enough good things about the program. The staff were lovely, and I also met other Irish language enthusiasts from all over the US, Canada, and Europe.
I highly recommend the Oideas Gael program to anyone looking for an Irish language immersion, and I would suggest you go apply for the Gaeltacht summer award if you are a keen student. The awards are funded by the Irish Government’s Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and National Lottery, and applications are accepted in the spring from learners of all language levels. The application also requires a reference and some short personal essays.
I have attended Irish classes in DC for a few years now, so a big ‘go raibh maith agat’ to all my teachers and fellow students in the Ard Rang class! Please get in touch with me via our Fáilte DC Facebook group if you have any questions about the award or Oideas Gael!
