Lá na hEorpa / EU Open Day
Go raibh maith agaibh to our many volunteers who attended yesterday’s ‘European Union Open House’ at the Embassy of Ireland! Each year EU Embassies in the United States open their doors to the public for a celebration of culture, food and more. The event offers visitors a rare look inside the embassies and provides a unique opportunity for them to experience the cultural heritage and national traditions of the 28 member countries.
We were again invited to promote the Irish Language at the Irish Embassy, and it proved to be another fun opportunity to talk to the community about Irish and the things that we do. Despite the rain, there was a wonderful turnout. Our team of ‘gaeilgóirí’ did an excellent job of talking about the Irish language and introducing several hundreds of visitors to ‘an Ghaeilge’. Many of the visitors to the embassy had never heard about the Irish language before, but fortunately yesterday they had an opportunity to pick up a few ‘cúpla focal’ under the tutelage of our volunteers! Naturally, in keeping with famed Irish hospitality, plenty of freebies were on hand so that visitors didn’t leave empty-handed!! See below for a slideshow of photos from the big day:
Go raibh maith agaibh uilig / Thank you to all who volunteered and visited us!
Arlington Bi-Weekly Meetup:
- The new Irish language Meetup in Arlington had a very successful launch last Monday, May 5th. This group will be meeting on the first and third Monday of each month, with the next Meetup taking place on Monday, 19th. Marty McNutt is looking forward to welcoming all levels, from total beginners to fluent speakers at Bayou Bakery 1515 N Courthouse Rd, Arlington, VA (Courthouse metro, Orange Line).
For the second session, the group will review the first three chapters of Buntús Cainte. The early chapters are short exercises which will be very useful to new learners, and a fun review for experienced speakers. Marty will contact everyone who RSVP’s so that they have the relevant materials and audio to practice with before the meeting – for more details and to let Marty you will attend, go to our Meetup page. Buntús Cainte is available to buy at www.IrishIsFun.com
